Resumen

Community based youth programs can provide a safe space for adolescents to spend time during off school hours. It is during this time that parents become concerned because youth could be more vulnerable to drugs and crime. According to some findings, it is during after-school hours that juvenile crime peaks as many adolescents arrive to an unsupervised home (Chung, 2000). But going beyond the physical space to safeguard youth from violence, community centers can provide appropriate, practical, and effective programs for youth’s identity development, exploration, and social relationship building.
